How to Fix Your Refrigerator Ice Maker

How to Fix Your Refrigerator Ice Maker
I understand why, since Consumer Reports said any fridge with an ice maker breaks about forty percent more often than those without. That only tells me not to buy a fridge with an ice maker in the future, not to do with the broken ice maker in my home now. If it has leaked water to the point that the ice maker is encased in ice, don’t bother fixing it – just replacing it.
I suppose that’s because the electrical problems created when the ice melts are just too bad to be able to repair. And the mechanical problems the stresses of freezing and melting can cause. That’s minimal in an appliance made to freeze water. If the ice maker is leaking water, the first thing I’d say to check is the water line. It isn’t loose. I already looked.
Check the water line for frozen chunks of ice. That can block the water flow, forcing some water to leak out and freeze in the freezer. If I had a leak that bad, I’d expect flooding on the floor because that water melting plus the standard frost build up would overwhelm the drain tube. The other possibility is that the water does all fit in the drain tube but overflows the drain pan in the bottom.
It sounds weird to think there’s a leak in the ice maker resulting in a flood on the floor. I know. The more common route is simply flowing out of the ice maker, through the door and onto the floor. What if the ice maker isn’t working at all? Some units turn off if it realizes it has no water, while others sputter and grind while air bubbles pass through as tries to bring in water. This is more a matter of not seeming to make or dispense ice.
If the dispenser won’t dispense ice, the door could be stuck shut. So the hinge might be damaged. Or the door is frozen shut. I could fix that with a blow dryer. Another possibility is that the mechanical components that capture water, hold it until it forms cubes and dump it into a holding bin are stuck. Then it won’t make more ice. That may not be unstuck by warming it up. Especially not if it is rusted into place or the motors burned out. That’s probably best fixed by replacing the ice maker.
The other possibility is that the water filter filtering the water going into the ice maker needs to be replaced, so it gets no water and makes no ice. I think I’ve replaced the water filter in the fridge door. Check the fridge’s manual. It may use the same water filter for the water dispenser and the best counter top ice maker or have a separate one.
